The group met today with Jan, Craig, and Sheri and discussed the collaborative work products of the trip. The plan is to write two papers in sequence, as discussed below.
1 - The first paper will be a resilience assessment of the Platte River from before Kingsley Dam through the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program. The paper will be the synthesis of our (and other students') class papers in Craig's Foundations of Resilience last year. The group will be taking the rough manuscript (currently 96pages!) and creating a manuscript that will be submitted for publication to Ecology and Society and is due to Craig by the end of October.
2 - The second paper will be an assessment of the PRRIP as contrasted with one or two efforts on the Danube. Though this paper is somewhat more amorphous than the previous one, the goal is to apply a series of adaptive management indicators (or as Trisha calls them "principles" ;) to the various efforts and evaluate both the success of the effort and the value of the indicators/principles themselves. The group will start formally working on this paper after turning in the previous one and this paper will be due at the close of the trip.
The group will be meeting every Wednesday to work on the collaborative effort of the moment. Craig and Sheri will be Skype-ing in for that meeting at 9am - CST.
The blog of the 2011 UNL IGERT student trip to Wien, Austria authored by the students - Joana Chan, Christina Hoffman, Joe Hamm, Kristine Nemec, and Trisha Spanbauer.
The IGERT program brings students from various related disciplines together to address management of stressed watersheds (see http://snr.unl.edu/igert/ for additional information). While in Wien, students are meeting and working with local experts to learn about European watershed management, especially on the Danube.
